Our History

The Ski Club was started in Skye by Julian Toms and a few other fanatic skiers in the Autumn of 1987. The aims then were to make skiing in Scotland and abroad to be within the financial reach of young families in Skye and Lochalsh.

The club bid for grants from the Local Sports Council and the then Highlands and Islands Development Board. We were successful and managed to buy boots, skis and poles for hire from the club at remarkably low rates.

The club organised weekend visits to the Scottish resorts, often car sharing and using minibuses from the local communities, as well organising vibrant social events, dances and celidhs.

By Autumn of 1988 plans were in place for films, Ski Maintenance sessions, trips for Nordic ski-ing from Pitlochry, downhill from Nethybridge, Aviemore, the Lecht, Buffet dances, Ski fitness and a Trip to Borovets in Bulgaria( all in cost £285.00/person), for a cheap and excellent ski trip, the coach subsidised by Ski club funds.

Using club funds members were encouraged to attend Ski leader courses which helped in the training of youngsters and provided expertise in safety on the hills. Ski maintenance courses were booked and members became qualified ski technicians.

Over the years many successful overseas trips were organised. These were very popular with young families and we were able to take advantage of relatively cheap skiing in places such as Bulgaria and Italy.

As we look to the future the club has increased its stock of Snowboards and continues to hold good quality downhill and Cross country Skis and Boots which are available to hire.
